Box Score The Spalding University (0-1) women's basketball team fell to No. 2 Washington University (1-0) 88-57 in their season opener Saturday at Derek Smith Gymnasium (DSG).
The Golden Eagles started fast, jumping to a 13-8 lead on a
Jessica Guy jumper at 15:13 mark in the first half. The Bears responded with a 30-6 run, and SU found themselves heading into halftime trailing 47-26.
Spalding outscored Wash U. twelve to five to open the second half, to cut the Bears lead to 14 points at 52-38, but another big Wash U. run put the game out of reach as the Golden Eagles found themselves trailing 82-49, and went on to lose 88-57.
Wash U. outshot Spalding 53.2% to 34.5% for the game, outrebounded SU 32-28, and forced 17 Golden Eagle turnovers.
Senior point guard
Kerstin Hayes led the Golden Eagles with a game-high 18 points on 6 of 11 shooting from the field, and tallied four assists.
Jessica Guy and
Maya Hardin each scored 11 points, and Guy grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
Kristin Anda led Wash U with a team-high 17 points and six rebounds.
The Lady Eagles will be back in action Tuesday, November 26 when they travel to Danville, Kentucky to take on Centre College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m., ET at Alumni Gymnasium.
