LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Spalding University women's soccer team opened its 2026 campaign on a high note Tuesday evening, securing a hard-fought 1–0 shutout victory over Anderson University at Legacy Fields. In front of a crowd of 169 fans, the Golden Eagles relied on a strong defensive unit and a decisive second-half strike to edge out the Ravens in a competitive season opener.
The match began as a tense, back-and-forth battle, with both squads matching each other shot-for-shot during a scoreless first half. Spalding forward
Karolyn Lighthall applied early pressure on the Anderson back line, generating several dangerous opportunities, while Mailee Cornette led the offensive charge for the visiting Ravens. However, both goalkeepers stood tall in the opening 45 minutes, as Spalding's
Kinsley Bechtold and Anderson's Jada Van Steenvoort turned away every attempt to keep the game deadlocked at halftime.
Spalding elevated its aggressiveness after the break, outshooting Anderson 11–6 in the second half. The game-defining moment arrived at the 59:48 mark when senior defender
Claira Andrews found the back of the net to put the Golden Eagles ahead 1–0. Andrews nearly doubled the lead just two minutes later, but her strike ricocheted off the woodwork, keeping the Ravens within striking distance.
Anderson mounted a late push for an equalizer down the stretch, but Bechtold made key saves on shots from Cornette and Izzy Cameron to preserve the clean sheet. Bechtold finished the evening with six saves to seal the shutout, while Van Steenvoort recorded eight saves for Anderson as Spalding generated 17 total shots (nine on goal). With the win, Spalding moves to 1–0–0 on the season, while Anderson drops to 0–1–0.
