Huntingdon, AL — The Spalding University Golden Eagles earned a hard-fought 3-2 road victory over Huntingdon College in a closely contested baseball game at Neal Posey Field. Spalding improved its early-season record to 1–2, while the Hawks dropped to 7–1.
GAME RECAP
After a scoreless first two innings, Spalding broke through in the third inning. With runners on base,
Rocco Cimarosti delivered an RBI groundout, driving in
Ross Lucas to put the Golden Eagles on top 1-0.
Spalding padded the lead later in the game with timely offense. In the sixth,
Cayden Tucker singled in a run to extend the edge to 2-0. Then in the seventh, Cimarosti came through again — this time with a fielder's choice RBI that scored
Jesse Walter and made it 3-0.
The Hawks threatened late. Huntingdon cut into the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a double by J. Davidson, scoring J. Sampson and trimming the deficit to 3-1. In the eighth, the Hawks capitalized on a wild pitch that allowed T. Pruitt to score, making it a one-run game at 3-2 and setting up a tense finish.
But Spalding's defense and bullpen held firm.
Cameron Rayborn nailed down the win on the mound, pitching 7.2 innings of two-run ball with eight strikeouts, and
Will Bastin closed it out for the save in relief.
Offensively, Spalding collected 8 hits, led by solid performances from Cimarosti (2 hits, 2 RBI) and
Caleb Coffey (3 hits), while the pitching staff limited Huntingdon to just 4 hits.
