LOUISVILLE, Ky. - At Derek Smith Gymnasium, Spalding University secured a 60-54 victory over Blackburn College, improving their SLIAC record and showcasing a gritty performance on both ends of the floor.
TURNING POINT
Spalding led 24-23 at halftime and maintained that slim advantage through the second half, ultimately pulling away late to claim the win in front of a home crowd of 137. Spalding's balanced scoring attack featured
DeAireus Wells leading the way with 12 points, including a strong showing at the free-throw line (7 of 8), while
Kameron Jones,
Xavier Burton, and
Lekendrick Morris each added 10 points to pace the Golden Eagles offense. Morris was particularly efficient, going 5-of-5 from the field and contributing six rebounds and four assists, demonstrating his all-around impact.Â
The Golden Eagles shot 46.5% from the field and 36.8% from three, showing improved efficiency in the second half where they hit 6 of 10 triples after a slower start. Spalding also battled on the boards, finishing with 40 rebounds, and forced turnovers at key moments to keep Blackburn at bay. Defensively, Spalding limited Blackburn's scoring opportunities and held firm when the Beavers threatened to shift momentum. While Blackburn got a team-high 20 points from Jaylen Jeter, Spalding's collective effort in critical stretches helped preserve their lead and close out the game with a six-point margin.Â
Overall, the Golden Eagles demonstrated resilience and teamwork in a competitive conference matchup, earning a crucial SLIAC win to improve to 8-7 overall and 3-4 in league play.Â
