Spalding Women's volleyball competed in the Mountaineer Invitational over the weekend. The Golden Eagles grabbed a win against Kentucky State on Saturday, 3-0
SU moved to 1-5 on the season.
GAME ONE - SPALDING 0, BEREA 3
The Spalding University women's volleyball team dropped a 3–0 match to Berea on September 5 at the Seabury Center. The Golden Eagles finished with 31 kills and a .135 hitting percentage but couldn't keep pace with the Mountaineers, who posted 40 kills and a .192 percentage.
Sophi Reynolds led Spalding with 19 assists, while
Jobi Smith and
Harper Johnson added 8 and 6 kills. Defensively,
Jaylen Wheatley anchored the back row with 11 digs, but Berea's blocking and efficiency at the net proved decisive. Despite stretches of strong play, Spalding was unable to sustain momentum and fell in straight sets.Â
GAME TWO - SPALDING 3, KENTUCKY STATE 0
The Spalding University women's volleyball team earned a convincing 3–0 sweep over Kentucky State on September 6 at the Seabury Center. The Golden Eagles were efficient on offense, finishing with 43 kills and a .344 hitting percentage while holding the Thorobreds to 31 kills.
Harper Johnson led the attack with 12 kills, while
Paloma Martinez added 8 and
Shannon Kasama chipped in 7. Setting duties were split between
Sophi Reynolds and
Taimane Alo, who combined for 31 assists to keep the offense rolling. On the defensive end,
Jaylen Wheatley recorded 16 digs and also added 3 service aces to fuel Spalding's momentum. Behind balanced play at the net and strong back-row defense, the Golden Eagles controlled the match from start to finish to secure the straight-set win.
GAME THREE - SPALDING 1, KENTUCKY CHRISTIAN 3
The Spalding University women's volleyball team dropped a 3–1 match to Kentucky Christian on September 6 at the Seabury Center. The Golden Eagles stayed competitive in the attack, finishing with 49 kills compared to Kentucky Christian's 48, but struggled with efficiency, hitting just .131 while the Knights posted a .215 percentage.
Paloma Martinez led Spalding with 12 kills, while
Harper Johnson added 11 and
Shannon Kasama chipped in 8.
Sophi Reynolds and
Taimane Alo combined for 34 assists to pace the offense, and
Jaylen Wheatley anchored the defense with 19 digs. Despite the balanced contributions, Spalding was outblocked 13–3 and fell behind in service aces, 11–4, which proved decisive in the four-set loss.Â
