HANOVER. Ind. – On Thursday, Spalding softball traveled to Hanover College for a doubleheader. SU earned a split on the day.
Spalding improved to 4-10 on the season, while the Panthers fell to 4-10.
GAME ONE - SPALDING 1, HANOVER 7
Hanover jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the second inning and building momentum throughout the game. The Golden Eagles struggled to find their rhythm offensively, managing just a few hits against a strong Hanover pitching performance.
Spalding's lone run came later in the game as they fought to close the gap, showing resilience at the plate. However, Hanover's early offensive surge proved too much to overcome.
GAME TWO - SPALDING 9, HANOVER 5
The game started with an early offensive explosion from Spalding. After a quiet first inning, the Golden Eagles broke through in the second, putting up four runs. They capitalized on Hanover's mistakes with timely hitting and aggressive baserunning, taking advantage of scoring opportunities when they presented themselves.
Hanover responded in the third, scoring two runs to narrow the gap to 4-2. However, Spalding quickly regained control. In the fourth inning, they put up another three runs, utilizing a combination of well-placed hits and smart base-running. This extended the lead to 7-2, giving the Golden Eagles a comfortable cushion.
Hanover wasn't done yet, though, and added a few more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to bring the score to 7-5. Despite the pressure, Spalding's defense tightened up, and their pitching staff delivered in key moments, preventing Hanover from closing the gap further.
In the final inning, Spalding added two insurance runs. A sacrifice fly followed a leadoff single, and another RBI single extended the lead to 9-5. This final push helped secure the win and prevent any late-game rallies from Hanover.
