LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding women's basketball team played SLIAC opponent Lyon on Thursday. SU won 79-60.
The Golden Eagles moved to 9-15 (8-9 SLIAC), while the Scots fell to 8-16 (5-12 SLIAC).
TURNING POINT
Lyon came out strong, using full-court pressure to force early turnovers and take a 10-5 lead in the opening minutes. Spalding responded with a 9-0 run, sparked by
Sydney Raque's scoring and
Zaneiya Batiste's rebounding, to take a 14-10 lead. The first quarter remained tight. A late fast-break score by Hollowell gave Spalding a 19-16 edge at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Lyon continued to pressure defensively, forcing tough shots, but Spalding's rebounding advantage kept them ahead. A quick burst by the Scots cut the lead to 28-26 with three minutes left in the half. However, Raque hit a tough jumper, Lute drained a three, and Batiste's putback extended the lead to 36-31 at halftime.
Spalding turned up the intensity in the third quarter, holding Lyon to just 13 points while capitalizing on second-chance opportunities. Raque's hot hand and Spalding's defensive adjustments stretched the lead to 54-44.
In the fourth quarter, the Golden Eagles sealed the win with a 29-point explosion, as Hollowell and Lute hit clutch shots and Spalding's defense forced key turnovers. SU took the win 79-60.
