Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Madison Loechle, Graduate Assistant

JR Hoe Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Spalding men's soccer hosted the JR Hoe Invitational this past weekend. Centre won the tournament with six points, Hanover snagged second with three points (beating SU by one goal differental), SU grabbed third, and Franklin finished last.

The Golden Eagles moved to a 1-1 start to the season, with a 3-1 loss to Hanover and a win against Franklin.

GAME ONE - SPALDING 1, HANOVER 3
The first half was a back and forth battle between the two teams. With seven minutes remaining, the Panthers scored their first goal. SU tried to find an equalizer before halftime, but came up short. The Panthers took the lead into halftime, 1-0. 

Opening the second half, SU was hungry for an equalizer. At the 62nd minute mark, Mustafa Almohammedewi found the bottom right corner of the net. This made it a 1-1 ballgame. Just two minutes later, the Panther attack got the better of the Golden Eagle defense. This gave Hanover a 2-1 lead. With 14 minutes remaining, the Panthers created more separation. They netted another goal, making it 3-1. Hanover held strong and took the win, 3-1.

GAME TWO- SPALDING 2, FRANKLIN 1
Entering this game, SU came to play. The midfielders, for both squads, were battling in the first half. As the clock ticked, SU struck first. Reid Schulten netted his first career goal as a Golden Eagle off of a beautiful assist by Agustin Vargas. This was also Vargas' first assist as a Golden Eagle. SU took the lead into the half, 1-0.

The Grizzlies' came out with some vengeance. Franklin answered with a goal of their own with 31 minutes remaining. SU and Franklin were going back and forth like a ping pong game for the next 25 minutes. With five minutes remaining, SU finally pulled ahead. Sam Mulume tapped it around Franklins' keeper off of a beautiful pass by Ali Alkhabi. Spalding was able to finish the game strong and win the game, 2-1.

  • Reid Schulten netted his first career goal as a Golden Eagle.
  • Micah Mattes made five saves over the weekend.

Next For Spalding
The Golden Eagles will be on the road to Danville, Ky. on September 6th to play in the Bob Allen Nissan Classic. SU will take on Wilmington College. Kick-off is scheduled at 5:30 p.m.
