LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Spalding men's soccer hosted Berea College on Wednesday. SU and the Mountaineers ended the match even, 1-1.
SU moved to 3-2-2 on the season, while Berea advanced to 1-5-2.
TURNING POINT
It was a beautiful afternoon to begin this in-state rivalry matchup. When the first half began, the intensity of this game was felt immediately by both squads. Just a minute into the game,
Eddie Mendez-Perez hit a shot at the bottom of the goal. The Mountaineers goalie keeper kept his line and made a wonderful save. As the game continued, the pressure by both attacks were felt by each goalkeeper. Two minutes went by and
Micah Mattes made an amazing diving save to keep it at 0-0. The clock ticks until it hits two minutes left in the half.
Forte Bess, attacker for SU, broke the ice.
Dieuvick Tshiasuma found Bess on the far side post off of a cross. Bess hammered a goal on the left side of the net. This gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage going into the half.
To begin the second half, the Mountaineers came out with some vengeance. With 36 minutes remaining on the clock, Berea found an equalizer, making it 1-1. After this moment this match became one to remember. The aggressiveness became a lot for both squads causing chippiness. In the next 30 minutes, the referee gave out six yellow cards, with one converting to a red. In the 82nd minute, SU tried to take control of the game as they were a man up. The Golden Eagles tallied 15 shots on Berea in the second half, but the goalkeeper for the Mountaineers was a brick wall. The game ended as honors even, 1-1.
