SEWANNEE, Tn. — The Spalding women's volleyball team participated in the Sewanee Invitational on September 6th and 7th. The team ended the weekend with a record of 2-1 for the weekend. SU defeated Maryville College and Saint Joseph's College of Maine.
After the weekend, Spalding moved to a 2-5 record.
M1: Spalding 3, Maryville 1
The Golden Eagles started the first set strong. SU won the first seven rallies, adding momentum to the squad. The Scots found their footing and tallied up four points of their own. The first set was a back and forth match between the two teams. At the end of the set, Spalding prevailed with a score of 25-16.
To start the second set, SU got started off on a positive note.
Abigail Ratts and
Ella Clark gained the Golden Eagles first points on the scoreboard, with a massive block. This got Spalding going as they had plenty of momentum on their side.
Jobi Smith helped the Golden Eagles win the second set with back-to-back kills of her own. The second set was no different then the first with each team on the other's heels. Spalding took the second set, 25-21.
SU rallied the first four points to begin the second set. The Scots went on a 9-2 run to give them the lead 10-7. Spalding answered with a 5-1 run of their own, beginning with a kill off of
Jayda Branch. The Scots and the Golden Eagles kept fighting for the lead the remainder of the set, trading off the lead majority of the time. Maryville was able to come together for the last four points and secure the set for their team, 26-24.
To open the fourth set, Branch tallied a kill to put SU up, 4-2. The Scots and the Golden Eagles battled back-and-forth until it was tied at 11. A kill by
Jobi Smith started a 5-0 run for SU, 16-11. As the score reached 23-18, Clark put the nail in the coffin. Clark tallied back to back aces to put Spalding on top, 25-18.
M2: Spalding 0, Sewanee 3
The Tigers started off the match on fire with a 6-2 run. Branch tallied a kill of her own to try to push SU back into the game. Despite the great effort from the Golden Eagles, the Tigers kept consistent with their attack. Spalding tried to rally back into the match, but fell short 25-20.
The Tigers kept their momentum and got out to a 5-0 lead to open the second set. Spalding was not going down without a fight. SU fought back and took a 16-13 lead. Four kills by Branch, and a kill each by Clark and
Jobi Smith helped push the Golden Eagles in their attack. Despite great efforts by SU, the Tigers held steady to finish out the set 25-21.
Set three was a constant battle between the foes. Sewanee started the set with a 4-0 run. The Golden Eagles pushed back to tie the score at 14. Spalding kept the set within two points, but ended up falling just short to the Tigers 25-23.
M3: Spalding 3, Saint Joseph's College of Maine 0
Three attacking errors by the Monks and an ace by Tieman put SU ahead early, 4-0. SJC fought back into this set, making it 8-6 in favor of Spalding. Attacking errors by the Monks got the best of them, pushing SU ahead by nine, 16-7. The Golden Eagles controlled the remainder of this set, winning 25-15.
Spalding's momentum carried over to the second set. Two kills by Branch and a kill each by Tieman and Clark put SU ahead 5-1. The streak continued as Maggie Sylvester and Jessica Christman each snagged an ace. SU kept control of this set as the score reached 14-4. The foot was still on the gas for the Golden Eagles as they stayed in full control, taking the second set 25-11.
To begin the third set, the Monks and SU were fighting for an advantage over one another as the score reached 10-10. A kill by Ratts allowed Spalding to go on a 4-0 run to create some separation, 17-13. The Golden Eagles ended this game with the final five points in the match. SU took the win 25-19.
