TERRE HAUTE, In. – Spalding softball traveled to Rose-Hulman on Thursday. Spalding won 9-1 and 5-3 to sweep the series.
SU moved to 20-16 on the season, while the Fightin' Engineers fell to 21-17.
GAME ONE - SPALDING 9, ROSE-HULMAN 1
It was a quick start for the Golden Eagles. A mistake by the pitcher allowed
Grayce Marcum to reach home and give SU the lead early. The pitching by both teams held strong as the game reached the bottom of the fourth. The Fightin' Engineers tallied their first run of the game to even the score, 1-1.
At the top of the fifth SU found their momentum.
Bella Velez hit a single RBI to center field, allowing
Karlee Terral to get home.
Allison Nell followed with her own RBI single. SU had the lead at the end of the fifth, 3-1.
The Golden Eagles did most of their damage in the top of the sixth. Marcum, Velez,
Madison Loechle, and
Hayleigh Gnagie all tallied RBIs. Two mistakes by the Fightin' Engineers also cost them two runs. SU went on to win this game 9-1.
GAME TWO - SPALDING 5, ROSE-HULMAN 3
Marcum once again began the game on fire for SU. She hit a triple that allowed
Makenna Roush to reach home plate. Velez followed with an RBI. Spalding took the lead at the end of the first, 2-0.
In the bottom of the second, Rose-Hulman had themselves a rally. They tallied three runs and took the lead, 3-2. Marcum came up big for SU for a third time. She hammered a home run to center field to tie the game at 3 apiece.
Roush came up big for the Golden Eagles in the top of the fourth. She hit a line drive through the middle of the field to tally two RBIs. SU held strong and took the win, 5-3.
