LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Spalding women's lacrosse earned their first Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference (HCLC) win on Wednesday. SU defeated Hanover 15-12.
SU moved to 3-8 (1-1 HCLC), while the Panthers fell to 4-7 (1-1 HCLC).
TURNING POINT
The Panthers started hot, scoring two goals in the first four minutes of the game. However, it did not take long for SU to strike right back, thanks to a beautiful pass from
Mahalia Dominguez to
Emma Beach, who put it into the back of the net. This marked SU's first goal. Over the next three minutes, it was all Hanover. The Panthers netted two more goals to take the 4-1 advantage. Beach, however, wasn't done yet. She snagged another goal with seven minutes remaining, but the Panthers fired back again, maintaining the lead, 5-2. As the clock ticked down, the Golden Eagles needed an answer. With two minutes remaining, Beach snagged another goal for SU, giving her a hattrick for the game. Hanover led at the end of the first, 4-1.
To start the second quarter, SU came out showing pure dominance. Spalding scored five straight goals to take the lead, 8-5. The goals were scored by
Kathryn Moore (three for a hattrick) and Beach (two more for five total). As the clock ticked, Hanover grabbed another goal to make it 8-6. It did not take long for the Golden Eagles to respond.
Taylor Young netted a goal, grabbing her first goal of the game. With eight minutes remaining in the half, the Panthers grabbed the last two goals to narrow the lead into the half. SU took the lead into halftime, 9-8.
Three minutes into the third, both Hanover and SU scored a goal. Moore scored for SU, giving her four goals on the day. It was a back-and-forth battle as each team scored back-to-back. Hanover grabbed one, followed by Beach for SU. Hanover again netted a goal with two minutes remaining, but SU did not take long to bounce right back. Beach netted yet another goal with a minute remaining in the third to end the quarter, with Spalding winning 12-11.
The dogfight continued as it entered the fourth quarter. Beach stayed on fire as she netted another for the Golden Eagles to give them a two-goal advantage. The Panthers did not give up as they snagged a quick one right back. With her ninth goal of the game, Beach netted another. She pushed Spalding ahead by two. With three minutes to go,
