LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Spalding baseball hosted SLIAC opponent Westminster on Saturday. The Golden Eagles earned the sweep, winning 5-1 and 7-1 over the Blue Jays.
SU moved to 14-9 (6-0 SLIAC), while Westminster fell to 9-16 (2-4 SLIAC).
GAME ONE - SPALDING 5, WESTMINSTER 1
It was a slow start for both teams, as neither could find a run until the third inning.
Dryden Schroeder began the rally for the Golden Eagles as he singled to left field.
Hunter Strong followed with a great at-bat, as he was walked.
Evan Fisher stepped into the box and singled to the left field to load the bases.
Matthew McDowell was hit by a pitch, which allowed all the players to advance, giving SU their first run of the game. SU took the lead, 1-0.
In the top of the fourth, the Blue Jays tied the game as they homered to center field. As it reached the bottom of the fourth, SU had their biggest inning of the game.
Ethan Tuttle began the hitting with a triple to left center. Schroeder followed by reaching first off of a fielder's choice. Strong hit a single through the right side, sending Schroeder to third. SU was on a roll as Fisher stepped into the box. Fisher doubled through the right side, as an error by the Blue Jays sent two Golden Eagles home, extending the lead to 3-1. SU did not stop there as
Jacob Spanyer doubled to left center, scoring another run for Spalding.
Whitt Callahan singled to the right field, sending Spanyer home. This gave SU a four-run advantage. SU's pitching and defense held firm as they took the win, 5-1.
GAME TWO - SPALDING 7, WESTMINSTER 1
It was all Spalding from the start to begin the second game.
Michael Speck tallied a double to get SU rolling. A sacrifice fly from Strong sent Speck home to give SU the lead in the third inning. As the fourth inning hit, SU had themselves another rally. Callahan got things going with a rocket-powered home run to left field. McDowell followed with a double of his own.
Jonathan Lopez had a great at-bat as he got walked to land two on base for Spalding. Speck had a huge hit that led to a triple and two more SU players to score. This extended SU's lead, 4-0. Just as the Blue Jays thought the rally was over, Tuttle hit a single through the right side to give SU another run to close the inning, 5-0.
In the fifth inning, Spalding tallied another run. Fisher hit an absolute moon shot of a home run to left field to give SU another run. The Spalding defense held strong as it reached the bottom of the seventh. Spanyer stepped into the batter's box and blasted a home run well over the batter's eye in center field to extend the lead. Westminster did not have an answer for Spalding but did grab a run in the top of the eighth. Spalding held on strong and took the win, 7-1.
