Softball grabs a split against the Panthers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Spalding softball won against Hanover College this past Thursday, giving the Golden Eagles their first win of the season.

Spalding improved their record to 1-4, while Hanover fell to 3-9.

GAME ONE - SPALDING 0, HANOVER 9
The Panthers took command of the game early on. In the second inning, Hanover got on the board first. Despite the Golden Eagles trying to retaliate, the Panthers did not allow anything. When it got to the top of the fifth, Hanover winning 3-0, had themselves an inning. They took control of this game and scored six runs to end the game. The Panthers took game one, 9-0.

GAME TWO - SPALDING 13, HANOVER 4
Spalding came out of the second game, looking for revenge. The Golden Eagles found themselves down early, 3-0. In the second inning, SU looked like a different team. Six runs were scored for the Golden Eagles. An error by the Panthers started the rally for Spalding. Dawn Wilson, Grayce Marcum, and Bella Velez singled to allow SU on the board. Spalding took the lead to end the second inning, 6-3. 

To start the fourth inning, Hanover got another run to make it 6-4. Wilson got on base with another single in the bottom of the fourth. Marcum stepped up to the plate and hammered a two-run homer at center field to make it 8-3. SU did not stop there. Karlee Terral singled to center field to send Velez home for another run. To put the cherry on top in the inning, the Panthers made another error to give Spalding another run to end the inning. The Golden Eagles led 10-3 to end the fourth inning. 

As the bottom of the fifth approached, the Golden Eagles knew they were one run away from a mercy-rule win. Marcum once again stepped up to bat. She blasted another homerun to the right-center field to get Spalding three more runs and the win. The Golden Eagles took the lead 13-4.

GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES
  • Grayce Marcum led SU to a win with two home runs (six RBIs) and 4-4 from the game.
  • Dawn Wilson tallied 3-4 on hits and earned an RBI.
  • Bella Velez earned two RBIs of her own.
  • The Golden Eagles grabbed their first win of the season.

Spalding will face Emory University on Tuesday, March 12th. First pitch will take place at 4 p.m.
