Softball earned a Split in Missouri

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Spalding softball traveled to WashU on Saturday. SU grabbed a comeback win over WashU, to earn a split for the day.

Spalding improved to 6-12 after the weekend affairs.

GAME ONE - SPALDING 8, WASHU 7
It was a rough start for the Golden Eagles to begin their Saturday games. WashU had a fantastic start as they tallied three runs in the second inning. The Bears did not stop there. When it hit the fourth inning, it did not look very good for SU. WashU scored four more runs to make it 7-0.

Just as it hit the top of the fifth, SU knew they had to dig deep to grab this win. Brooklyn Nolot singled to left field to begin the rally for Spalding.  Carsyn Sidebottom singled through the left side, which advanced Nolot to second. Karlee Terral followed with a single of her own to load the bases for the Golden Eagles. At this time you could tell SU looked like a totally different team. With zero outs and bases loaded, Morgan Gambrell stepped into the box. Gambrell singled up the middle, which sent Nolot home. This put SU on the board for the first time. Grayce Marcum followed Gambrell, with zero outs and bases still loaded. Marcum did what she does best and blasted a ball through the right side to send Sidebottom home. Bella Velez and Madison Loechle kept the rally going for SU. Velez singled, sending a runner home, and Loechle also singled to send two runners home. This made it a 7-5 ball game in a blink of an eye. It seemed like a single rally, as Allison Nell also singled to the left side. The Bears did not have an answer for SU in the top of the fifth. Just as it looked like the inning was over, SU grabbed two more runs to tie the game. At the end of the fifth, the score was 7-7.

To begin the sixth inning, Kori Calvert pitched a huge inning. She gave up zero hits as the Bears went down with three straight outs. Marcum got things rolling for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the sixth. She doubled to left center. A costly error by the pitcher allowed Marcum to score to give SU their first lead of the day. Spalding used this momentum to close out the game, winning 8-7.

GAME TWO - SPALDING 1, WARTBURG 10
It was a strong start for the Knights. Wartburg tallied nine runs in the first two innings. As the top of the third began, SU tried to fight back into this one. Velez doubled to right center. Makenna Roush came in and pinch ran for Velez. Loechle stepped into the batter's box and hit a double down the left field line. This advanced Roush and put Spalding on the board for the first time in this game. The Knights were too much to handle, and held SU off for the remainder of the game. Wartburg took this game, 10-1.
