LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Spalding women's lacrosse hosted the Huntingdon College Hawks on Friday. The Golden Eagles defeated the Hawks 12-6.
SU moved to a 1-0 overall record, while Huntingdon fell to 0-1.
TURNING POINT
To begin the first quarter, it was a slow start for the Golden Eagles. Just 15 seconds into the game, Huntingdon nailed a goal to take the early lead. Spalding responded very well as
Emma Beach recorded her first goal as a Golden Eagle with an assist from
Mahalia Dominguez to make it a 1-1 game. The Hawks got their revenge as they found back-to-back goals two minutes later, making it 3-1. Once again, SU did not give up. The Golden Eagles recorded four goals in just four minutes of play. The goals were scored by
Kathryn Moore, Beach (two more goals, recording a hat-trick), and
Taylor Young. SU closed the first with a huge momentum boost, winning 5-3.
Once again, the Hawks strike fast to begin the quarter. The Golden Eagles fired back with their own run as they tallied two more goals. Moore netted both goals, giving her a hat trick for the game (the second Golden Eagle with a hat trick in this game). The defense held strong for SU to end the half. Spalding took the lead into halftime, 7-4.
Spalding carried the momentum from the first half as Young grabbed her second goal for the game. The Golden Eagles did not let off the gas peddle as Moore netted back-to-back goals. This tallied Moore to five goals for the game and gave Spalding some cushion as the score reached 10-4. The Hawks had a solid finish to the quarter as they scored two in a row to make it a four-goal ball game. SU closed the quarter, winning 10-6.
As the fourth and final quarter started, the Golden Eagles knew history was right at their fingertips. The clock kept ticking as Spalding dug deep to get their first win in school history. With 12 minutes remaining, Dominguez recorded her first goal of the season. This just gave the Golden Eagles confidence as the time clicks towards history. With two minutes remaining on the clock, Moore added to history as she grabbed her sixth goal of the game. SU held on strong and took the win, 12-6.
