Baseball grabs two wins at the Piedmont University Round Robin

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Spalding baseball team traveled south to play in the Piedmont University Round Robin to open up their season. The Golden Eagles won 4-3 over North Carolina Wesleyan, lost 0-4 to Chapman University, and won 9-4 over the hosts Piedmont University.

GAME ONE - SPALDING 4, NORTH CAROLINA WESLEYAN 3
In the first game, the Golden Eagles found themselves down entering the top of the fifth inning. Michael Speck got walked to begin the inning, followed by a single from Whitt Callahan. Caleb Coffey stepped up to the plate and singled to left field. This advanced Speck home, making it a tie-ball game, 1-1.

It was not until the top of the seventh that more runs were scored. Matthew McDowell got on base with a single to center field. Callahan singled once again to center field to advance the runner. Coffey followed the hitting streak with a single of his own, giving him his second RBI of the game, 2-1 in favor of SU. Back-to-back errors by NCW gave Spalding two more runs on the board, 4-1, to close out the top of the seventh.

At the bottom of the ninth, the Golden Eagles held on despite NCW grabbing two more runs. SU won 4-3.

GAME TWO - SPALDING 0, CHAPMAN 4
Spalding had a rough day two at the Piedmont University Round Robin, as they couldn't get a run on the board.

Chapman got on the board early as they hit a home run. Spalding countered with six hits of their own during the game, but it wasn't enough to get anyone back to home plate.

Chapman went on to win this, 4-0.

GAME THREE - SPALDING 9, PIEDMONT 4
The last game of the three-game road trip was against the hosts. The Golden Eagles had something to prove.

It was a low-scoring contest until the fourth inning. McDowell singled, which sent Hunter Strong home, giving SU the lead. Piedmont responded with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Golden Eagles owned the next three innings. A double by Jacob Spanyer gave SU some momentum. This allowed Ethan Tuttle to score. McDowell singled again in the fifth to give the Golden Eagles more cushion.
In the sixth inning, Spayner nailed a three-run home run to boost Spalding over the top. It was all SU to close out this game, 9-4.

GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES
  • Jacob Spanyer nailed SU's first home run of the season.
  • The Golden Eagles had a great weekend, grabbing their first two wins.
  • Cameron Rayborn threw six innings, faced 19 batters, and only allowed one hit.
