ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Spalding men's soccer traveled to Webster University Saturday to compete in the SLIAC Championship. Spalding won 2-1, claiming their first SLIAC Championship in program history.
SU moved to 11-7-2 on the season, while the Gorloks season ended.
TURNING POINT
Spalding opened the first half of the championship seeking their first SLIAC Championship. At the 23rd-minute mark,
Mustafa Almohammedawi hit a shot in the bottom right-hand corner to give the Golden Eagles the lead, 1-0.
Micah Mattes made some huge saves, while SU's defense held firm to end the first half, winning 1-0.
SU was just a half away from making program history. Just 20 minutes into the half, the Gorloks found the equalizer. They tied the game, 1-1, in the 64th minute. As the clock ticked, the Golden Eagles were applying pressure to Webster's goalkeeper. With three minutes remaining in the game,
Eddie Mendez-Perez scored the game-winner.
Forte Bess found Mendez-Perez, tallying an assist for the Golden Eagles. SU took home the win, 2-1. This gave Spalding their first SLIAC Championship in program history.
