LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Spalding women's volleyball hosted the Berea Mountaineers on Wednesday. SU beat the Mountaineers 3-1.
The Golden Eagles moved to 8-11 on the season, while the Mountaineers fell to 4-15.
TURNING POINT
The first set got off to a quick start. Neither team could pull ahead by more than two points, eventually knotting up at 9-9. Berea pulled ahead, scoring five of six points, before
Jayda Branch tallied three kills to tie the game at 15-15. Despite the energy from SU, the Mountaineers pulled away to win the first set 25-20.
The close battle continued to open the second set. The game reached 10-8 in favor of the Mountaineers. Berea kept control of the set as the score reached 15-10.
Ella Clark followed with an ace boosting the momentum Spalding's way. Five straight kills by Branch made it a tie game at 23 a piece. Back-to-back errors by Berea allowed SU to take set two, 27-25.
The momentum continued by the Golden Eagles to begin the third set.
Jobi Smith tallied a kill to put SU ahead 4-0. Berea countered with a 4-1 run to make it 5-4 in favor of Spalding. Three more kills by Branch and two errors gave the Golden Eagles a bigger margin, 10-4. After a timeout, the Mountaineers went on a 13-4 run to give them the lead 17-14. Kills by Branch,
Abigail Ratts, and errors by Berea gave SU a 7-0 run of their own. This gave the Golden Eagles a 22-17 advantage. Errors by Berea were rough on them to finish this set. Spalding took the set, 25-18.
Berea was seeking revenge to open the fourth set. A couple of errors by the Golden Eagles let the Mountaineers go on an 8-2 run. Branch continued her great day with three more kills, while Smith tallied back-to-back kills. This narrowed the lead to three, 13-10 in favor of Berea. Smith helped push Spalding back into the game with three more kills in a row. This made it a 23-23 game. Of course, Branch and Smith each tallied another kill to push Spalding on top. With their amazing performances, the Golden Eagles took the set 25-23.

Spalding will return home on Saturday, October 19th, playing host to Eureka College and Blackburn College. First serve is scheduled for 10:00 AM against the Red Devils.
