Great Team Effort leads Golden Eagles past Owls

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – On Thursday, Spalding women's basketball hosted St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) opponent Mississippi University for Women (MUW). The Golden Eagles defeated the Owls 65-46.

SU moved to 5-9 (3-4 SLIAC), while the Owls fell to 4-6 (3-3 SLIAC) on the season.

TURNING POINT
In the first quarter, it was a low-scoring contest by both sides. Neither team could find the bottom of the net until two minutes into the game. The Owls struck first, but it did not take long for SU to grab their first points. An offensive rebound by Isis Rodgers led to a mid range jump shot made by Sydney Raque. The Owls proceeded to go on their own 10-2 run to create some separation. It was a strong ending to the quarter for the Golden Eagles as SU made it a ball game. MUW took the lead into the second quarter, 11-14.

A driving layup by Ma'Kaylia Lute got the Golden Eagles on the board to begin the second quarter. It was an even affair for the next five minutes of the game, as neither team could find any separation between each other. With five minutes remaining in the quarter, Nicole Hollowell caught fire. Hollowell scored the next eight points for Spalding. She hit back to back threes while also hitting a layup. This helped SU close out the half with the lead, 32-27.

Hollowell started the third quarter just like how she ended the first half. The sophomore hit another three to give the Golden Eagles an eight point cushion, 35-27. SU maintained the lead with the help of Raque's three pointer followed by her layup. Spalding kept their distance and the lead ending the third quarter, 51-44.

A defensive rebound by Hollowell found Raque for a fast break layup to begin the final quarter. Foul trouble by the Golden Eagles gave MUW a chance as they made it a five point ball game, 53-48. Once again, Raque came up huge for Spalding. She hit another three point field goal to give Spalding a more comfortable lead. The Golden Eagles held on to win this one, 66-54.
