Volleyball sweeps Louisville matchup against Boyce

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University volleyball team prevailed in an Old Louisville versus Crescent Hill battle against Boyce College by notching a 3-0 sweep.

The 25-19, 25-17, 25-21 win pushed SU up to .500 at 2-2 and dropped the Bulldogs to 2-6.

TURNING POINT

Spalding and Boyce traded runs and points back and forth for a majority of the first set. Both teams traded kills to open the match and neither took more than a two-point lead until a kill from Abigail Ratts followed by a Bulldog error put SU up 9-6. The Golden Eagles finally got separation when a Jayda Branch kill kicked off a 5-1 run that gave frame one to SU 25-19.

The home squad built a larger lead and did so much quicker in the second set. An 8-1 Spalding run, that featured six Boyce attack errors, one BC bad set, a block assist from Halle Calbert and Kayla Dunican, and a solo block from Ratts, put the Golden Eagles up 10-5. SU held the lead and won set two 25-17.

Set three was the closest of the night. This time it was the Bulldogs who jumped out to an early lead. After being tied at 9-9, the visitors used a 5-1 streak to go up by four points. Spalding answered back not long after with a 5-0 run, thanks to three Boyce errors and two Dunican kills, that gave SU a 17-15 lead. The Bulldogs tied it twice more, but a Drea White block sealed the match-clinching 25-21 set win.
