Party in Peoria: Softball wins first SLIAC Championship

PEORIA, Ill. - The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Softball Tournament trophy is coming home to Louisville for the first time ever after a day full of highs and lows for Spalding.

SPALDING 10, FONTBONNE 0
The first game of the day did not go as the Golden Eagles wanted.

A double, a wild pitch and two singles gave the No. 2 seeded Griffins a 5-0 lead early in the top of the first inning. Spalding got a hit in the opening frame, thanks to a lead off double from Madison Loechle, but failed to put up any runs.

Fontbonne sent two more home in the top of the second with a double and a single driving those runs in. The Griffins added to their lead even more in the fourth with an RBI triple and in the fifth with an RBI single.

The Golden Eagles got one more hit in the form of a single by Karlee Terral in the fifth inning, but continued to struggle on the offensive end.

Fontbonne took game one in a run-rule shortened 10-0 win.

SPALDING 9, FONTBONNE 1
Spalding went down early in the win-or-go-home game two, but did not stay down long.

Down 1-0, the Golden Eagles got on the board with a Jessica Tucker double that scored Grayce Marcum who reached on an earlier fielder's choice. Another run came across for Spalding in the inning when Tucker scored on a Hayleigh Gnagie single.

The rest of the game was all Golden Eagles.

Brooklynn Nolot hit a triple in the bottom of the second which scored Terral who had just hit a single. Dawn Wilson followed with a single that drove another run in. After a walk and a fly out, a sacrifice bunt from Tucker sent another Spalding runner home. The final score of the inning was a two-RBI homer to left center for Bella Velez.

In the fourth, Loechle stole second and advanced to third on the throw. That action sent Wilson into motion who beat the throw to steal home.

The final run of the contest came on a Nolot double that sent Kaleigh Franklin-Brooks in and kicked in the run-rule. The Golden Eagles won the program's first SLIAC title with a 9-1 win in five innings.

GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES
  • Both Madison Loechle and Karlee Terral got one hit each in the first game.
