Baseball fights way into SLIAC Championship

O'FALLON, Mo. - It took two games but Spalding baseball clinched a berth in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) after a 3-0 loss to Webster University and a 5-4 elimination game win over Westminster College.

SPALDING 0, WEBSTER 3
Game one was a low-scoring affair.

Neither team put any runs on the board in the first six innings. The defense for both teams held steady until Webster got hot in the bottom of the seventh.

The Gorloks used two doubles in the seventh frame to bring three runners home.

For the Golden Eagles, the bats could not get going and the 3-0 loss moved them to the elimination round.

SPALDING 5, WESTMINSTER 4
Spalding got behind early after Westminster scored on a passed ball followed by a solo home run in the top of the first.

The first Golden Eagle run came on a double play in the second inning. Nicholas Salas scored the run making the best of a two-out play.

Ethan Tuttle tied the game with an RBI single in the fifth and then a Salas sacrifice fly scored Jacob Spanyer.

A Tuttle sacrifice bunt in the sixth and a Salas double in the seventh built the lead to 5-2. That margin was shrunk when the Blue Jays had back-to-back home runs in the top of the eighth.

Wesley Clark closed things out from the mound in the top of the 9th striking out two of the four batters who came to the plate.

Spalding advanced to the SLIAC Tournament Championship with a 5-4 triumph in the second game.

GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES
  • Jacob Spanyer led the Golden Eagle offense in the first game going 2-for-4.
  • Nicholas Salas went 2-for-2 in the second contest. Salas and Tuttle had a team-leading two RBI each.
  • Michael Newsom led Spalding in hits in the second game with a total of three.
  • Caleb Collins got the start on the mound in game one and also picked up the loss. He struck out three batters and allowed three runs on six hits.
  • Garrett Mathews was the starting pitcher in the second game. He struck out six and allowed just two runs on four hits.
  • Ethan Murphy and Joshua Wilmont each took the mound for two innings followed by Wesley Clark who pitched the final inning.
NEXT FOR SPALDING
The Golden Eagles face No. 1 seed Webster University in the championship at 2:00 p.m. EST at CarShield Field in O'Fallon, Mo. If Spalding wins the first game they must then win a second contest due to the double-elimination format.
