LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Spalding baseball head coach Matt Downs earned the 200th win of his career on Tuesday with a 7-2 win over Centre College.
The Golden Eagles moved to 22-7 overall after the victory while the Colonels fell to 24-12.
TURNING POINT
It was a tight contest through the first six innings.
Hunter Strong got Spalding on the board with a bang in the bottom of the first. Facing two outs, he hit a solo home run to left field. It was his third homer of the season.
Centre answered back with an RBI double in the top of the third, but the Golden Eagles got the lead back in the bottom of the fourth. That run came on a
Nicholas Salas RBI single that scored
Dryden Schroeder.
The Colonels tied things up at the top of the sixth with a single run. Spalding came back in a big way just an inning later. In the bottom of the seventh three runs were scored on a single play. Strong hit a two-RBI single up the middle that scored too. The ball was poorly fielded resulting in an error that scored another SU runner.
Two more runs were scored by the Golden Eagles in the eighth. Both of those runs came on a two-RBI single from
Matthew McDowell.
Spalding picked up the 7-2 win in the final home non-conference contest of 2023.
