LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Despite Hanover College's best attempts to steal a win, Spalding baseball took home a 14-13 walk-off victory on Tuesday night.
The Golden Eagles sit at 11-3 after the win as they head into St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play over the weekend.
TURNING POINT
Spalding was down 3-0 after a strong first inning for the Panthers, but quickly made up the difference and then some. A balk scored the first Golden Eagle. Following the balk, four doubles, one each from
Marcus Collins,
Michael Newsom,
Matthew McDowell, and
Hunter Strong, brought a total of five SU runners home.
The scoring slowed down until the top of the fourth when five Hanover runs were put on the board. Spalding pulled ahead 9-8 in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of a Newsom double and a sacrifice fly from Strong.
A Panther single tied the game in the top of the sixth, but the Golden Eagles pulled ahead by two in the bottom of the eighth thanks to two singles.
Hanover seemed primed to pull off the upset after tacking on three runs in the top of the ninth frame to build a 13-11 lead. Spalding came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth needing three runs.
Newsom came to the plate first and walked. McDowell followed and reached on the fielders choice that sent Newsom to second. A Strong single scored one runner and was followed by
Jacob Spanyer being intentionally walked. After a fielder's choice put on out on the scoreboard,
Dryden Schroeder hit a single that scored the game's winning runs.
The Golden Eagles won the game 14-13 in thrilling fashion.
