Baseball wins three in a row at Blue Wahoo Challenge

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Spalding baseball had full control of days three through five at Studer's Blue Wahoo Challenge with a 22-4 win over Carroll University followed by a 2-1 triumph over Edgewood College and a 9-4 victory against Grinnell College.

The Golden Eagles moved to 10-2 after the win streak.

GAME ONE – SPALDING 22, CARROLL 4
Spalding was never behind on Thursday and dominated the Pioneers yet again.

A Hunter Strong home run, with two outs on the board and Michael Newsom at first, put the Golden Eagles up 2-0 early in the first inning. The second frame continued the dominance with a Carroll error scoring one and a Dryden Schroeder double sending home three.

The Pioneers scored one run in the bottom of the second, but SU answered back with a three-run third inning followed by three-run fifth inning. While all the Spalding scoring was going on the Carroll bats were silent, with the opposing team scoreless in innings three through six.

The Golden Eagles scored 10 runs in the next two innings while only allowing the Cougars to put up three in the final frame.

Also of note, the Spalding pitchers did not walk a single batter in the 22-4 win.

GAME TWO – SPALDING 2, EDGEWOOD 1
Friday's game was tight all the way through. Edgewood got their first and only run on the board in the first inning as an EC runner scored on a double to left field. The Golden Eagles did not answer back until the fourth inning when Hunter Strong hit a leadoff home run deep into left field to tie the game.

In the seventh inning, Nicholas Salas came to the plate with no one on and two outs. Salas hit a home run to center field which ended up becoming the winning run in the 2-1 victory.

GAME THREE – SPALDING 9, GRINNELL 4
Each team scored in the first, but the Spalding held a 2-1 advantage after Newsom scored on a Jacob Spanyer single and Matthew McDowell scored on a fly out to right. The Golden Eagles tacked on one run each in the second and fourth frames to build a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Grinnell rallied and tied the game with three runs coming home. That tie did not last long with Spalding taking the lead in the next frame just four batters in on an Ethan Tuttle single.

The Golden Eagles added four more runs in the eighth to win the game 9-4.
