Men's Basketball snags a win in Florida

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – On Saturday, Spalding men's basketball went on the road to face Alma College for a neutral site matchup in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Golden Eagles defeated the Scots 72-66. 

SU moved to 4-6, while Alma fell to 6-5 on the season.

TURNING POINT
To begin the first half, it was a battle between both sides. Baskets hit by both sides kept the game close as it reached 21-21. The Scots gained some momentum after a couple of made free throws to go on an 11-3 run. This extended the lead for Alma, 32-24. A layup made by Devonte McCampbell sparked a little light for the Golden Eagles. This basket led to a closer affair to end the first in favor of the Scots, 39-34.

After halftime, Caden Bradford hit an immediate three-pointer to make it a two-point deficit for SU. Alma fired back with their own 8-0 run to give themselves a little cushion. Spalding did not give up, despite being down by 12, 49-37. Layups by Bradford and Anthony Dillard kept the Golden Eagles in this game, as they never gave up hope. With SU being down 60-57 with five minutes left, Spalding had to dig deep to pull out this victory. The defense by the Golden Eagles held the Scots to four points for the last eight minutes of this battle. Kameron Jones hit a big three-pointer to give Spalding the lead, 69-66. Spalding held strong to win, 72-66.

GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES
  • Caden Bradford led the way for SU with a career-high 24 points.
  • The Golden Eagles shot their best from three this season, 41.2% (7/17).
  • SU made five more free throws than the Scots.

Spalding will travel to St. Louis, Missouri to face SLIAC opponent Webster on Thursday, January 4th. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
