LOUISVILLE, Ky. – On Saturday, Spalding women's basketball hosted St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) opponent Eureka. The Golden Eagles defeated the Red Devils 65-46. This is Spalding's second straight SLIAC win.
SU moved to 4-4 (2-1 SLIAC), while the Red Devils fell to 3-5 (1-2 SLIAC) on the season.
TURNING POINT
In the first quarter, it was a low-scoring contest by both sides. Neither team could find the bottom of the net until three minutes into the game. The Red Devils struck first with a three-pointer, but
Nicole Hollowell hit a jump shot to get SU the momentum. Spalding went on a 7-0 run, gaining a 7-3 advantage. The rest of the quarter was a free throw contest, ending 14-10 in favor of SU.
A putback layup by
Zaneiya Batiste sparked another run for the Golden Eagles, to begin the second quarter. Baskets by
Isis Rodgers and
Riana Caldwell helped contribute to an 11-3 run, making it 25-13. Spalding's defense held Eureka to only 7 points in the second quarter. SU took the lead into halftime, 29-17.
The third quarter was very similar to the first half. Spalding held strong, but it was a scoring battle by both squads. Two threes by Hollowell gave the Golden Eagles some momentum midway through the period. Despite Eureka outscoring Spalding 16-14 in the quarter, SU ended the third quarter with the lead, 43-33.
A beautiful pass by Caldwell found
Sydney Raque to begin the final quarter. Raque used her basketball IQ to hit a skilled floater over the Red Devils' defender. This boosted the Golden Eagles' confidence on the offensive end, as this was the highest-scoring quarter of the contest. SU ended with 22 fourth-quarter points. Spalding took the win, 65-46.
