LOUISVILLE, Ky - The Spalding men's soccer team was defeated by Greenville University in the semifinals of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) tournament, 3-0. The Golden Eagles season ended with an overall record of 8-6-3 (5-2-2 SLIAC), while the Panthers advanced to the finals.
TURNING POINT
Spalding came out in the first half, with
Mustafa Almohammedawi taking a shot almost immediately. From here on out, the Panthers put the pressure on the Golden Eagles and their defense. Greenville earned a corner kick, where a Panther's player was able to slip the ball past SU and into the goal, making it 0-1. Immediately after the goal, Greenville got the chance to go on the attack again and capitalized, making it 0-2. The two teams spent the last 30 minutes of the half testing each other's defense and keepers. Both teams proved to be strong and kept the score 0-2 at halftime.Â
The Golden Eagles came out firing shots. Both
Oliver Frankenfeld and
Forte Bess put the Panther's keeper to the test early in the second half. The keeper made the saves to keep Greenville in front, 0-2. As time went on, Greenville earned a corner late in the second half. The corner was taken and the ball took an unlucky bounce off the post and into the back of the net, putting the Panthers up 0-3. The Golden Eagles tried to put one on the scoreboard, with
Irakoze Chartier testing the Greenville keeper once more. The Panthers held strong to end the game and took the win, 0-3.
