Golden Eagles play to a stalemate in Illinois

GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Spalding men's soccer team traveled to Illinois on Saturday afternoon where they drew 1-1 with St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) opponent Greenville University. The result moved Spalding to 4-4-2 (1-1-1 SLIAC) and the Panthers to 3-6-2 (0-1-2 SLIAC).

TURNING POINT
The Golden Eagles and the Panthers fought back and forth to start the game. In a true battle, neither side could gain a true advantage over their opponent through the first 45 minutes. SU had 4 shots, but just could not find the back of the net.

The start of the second half saw Spalding facing an early barrage from the Greenville attack. The Golden Eagle defense held firm. After gaining possession near midfield, in the 74th minute, Spalding was able to draw a foul on the Panthers about 30 yards from the goal. From this dangerous spot, Irakoze Chartier slotted home an impressive free kick in the top right corner, giving the Golden Eagles the first advantage. Greenville was quick to respond to the Spalding goal, however, netting one of their own just 47 seconds later.

It was back and forth for the remainder of the game, but neither side was able to get a late push over their opponent. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.

GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES
  • Despite being outshot 13-6, Spalding held the advantage in shots on target percentage, 33.3 percent to 30.7 percent.
  • Micah Mattes had three saves to lead the goalkeeping effort.
