CARLINVILLE, Ill. - Senior Natalie Fichter had a career night as the Golden Eagles took down Blackburn 84-68 in the team's first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) win of the season.
Spalding moved to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in the SLIAC after the win. The Beavers fell to 1-10 and 0-2 in league action.
TURNING POINT
You would not have expected the final score watching the first quarter. Both squads played an even first frame with no team getting a lead over five points for most of the quarter.
In the final 24 seconds of the first quarter, a 5-0 run for the Golden Eagles, with three points from Sydney Raque and two from Anastasia Dowlen, gave Spalding the lead for good. The Golden Eagles held a lead of at least four points for the entirety of the second quarter.
Spalding built the lead to 13 twice in the third frame and held a double-digit advantage for most of the quarter. The home team went on an 8-0 run to end the third and cut the lead to three points.
With both teams' first SLIAC win on the line, it was the Golden Eagles who took control in the final quarter. An 8-0 run with 8:41 left to play pushed the Spalding lead to 11. A later 10-0 run, with two 3-pointers from Fichter and two baskets from Zaneiya Batiste in the paint, moved the lead to 20 points. SU ended the night with an 84-68 win.

The Golden Eagles topped the Beavers in points off turnovers (26-16), second-chance points (15-9), bench points (32-24), and fast break points (15-6).
