Storm-ed Back: Late game heroics lift men’s basketball

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Spalding men's basketball picked up a 56-53 statement win over St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) leading Webster on Saturday.

Spalding is now 4-14 overall and 3-5 in SLIAC action. The Gorloks fell to 10-9 overall and moved to 7-1 with their first loss in conference play.

TURNING POINT
The first half was close in the beginning, but the Golden Eagles started to take control late in the frame. A 7-0 run, that started with 2:26 left in the first, built the SU lead to 13 over the No. 1 team in the SLIAC.

Less than five minutes into the second half, Webster cut the visiting team's lead to two points. Spalding built the lead back to eight points with 9:25 left in the frame, but the lead did not last. With less than two minutes left in regulation, a Gorlok free throw and made basket gave the home team a two-point advantage.

Facing a loss, the Golden Eagles drove down the court. Jacoby Johnson got the ball at the top of the arc and dished it to Charlie Storm. Storm, standing in front of the Spalding bench on the right side, found the bottom of the net on a 3-pointer. The SU lead held the final 43 seconds and was punctuated by an Anthony Dillard layup.

The 56-53 Golden Eagle win ended Webster's 10-game winning streak. The win was also pivotal for SU's postseason hopes as the victory placed them in a four-way tie for fourth in the SLIAC.

GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES
  • Maxton Campbell led the team in scoring (15) and rebounds (16).
  • Campbell also had a career-high three steals and tied his rebounds mark in his third double-double of the season.
  • Anthony Dillard was the next double-digit performer for SU with 13 points.
  • Second-chance points came up big for Spalding to the tune of 21 points.
  • The Golden Eagle bench came up big again with 18 of the team's points coming from the reserves.
