EUREKA, Ill. - A much-needed St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) win came for the Spalding men's basketball team in a 81-78 triumph over Eureka College.
The Golden Eagles moved to 2-12 overall and 1-3 in the SLIAC. The Red Devils fell to 5-10 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.
TURNING POINT
The lead changed six times in the first 10 minutes of the game. Spalding took the lead back, and held it for the rest of the half, when Caden Bradford pick pocketed Eureka's Ben Carter and drove to the basket for an easy layup at 10:07 in the first.
The Golden Eagles built up the lead to double digits with 4:38 left in the opening frame. It did not last as the Red Devils slashed the deficit in half to make the score 29-24 going into the half.Â
Eureka immediately cut the lead to three coming out of the half. Spalding eventually built the lead to double digits again at 15:30 and went on to further grow their sizable lead. A 9-0 run, featuring 3-pointers from Bradford and Charlie Storm, pushed the SU advantage to 26 with just under 10 minutes to play.
Despite the Golden Eagle lead blossoming to 27, the game still had some excitement left. The Red Devils chipped away at their opponent's lead and made it a two-possession game with 1:09 left. Eureka then cut the Spalding lead to three with 28 seconds left in regulation. With their first SLIAC win of the year on the line, the Golden Eagles held tight and escaped with the 81-78 victory.
