PEORIA, Ill. – The Spalding University softball team was defeated by conference foes Fontbonne and Greenville to end their season and run in the tournament. The Golden Eagles finished the 2022 season with an overall record of 22-16 and 14-5 in SLIAC play.
Game 1: Fontbonne 7 Spalding 1 (Semi-Final)
After a thrilling comeback win in the opening round, Spalding looked to face the #1 seeded Fontbonne. The Griffins would score first in the bottom of the second inning as Fontbonne took advantage of throwing errors by the SU defense. As Fontbonne holds the 2-0 lead, the Spalding offense would cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth. Back-to back singles by
Jessica Tucker and
Bella Velez would put runners on for the Golden Eagles.
Madison Loechle would send a line drive back up the middle to score Tucker on the hit, giving Spalding their first and only run of the game. The Griffins would continue to bust out hits as they tack on another three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Golden Eagles could not convert offensively as Fontbonne would extend their lead to 7-1 and take the game.
Bella Velez ended 2-for-3 at the plate as
Madison Loechle also goes 2-for-3 with the only RBI for the Golden Eagles.
Erica McMann extends her record to 13-7 on the season in the circle.
Game 2: Greenville 7 Spalding 1 (Elimination Game)
Facing elimination from their tournament run, the Golden Eagles would take on the #2 seeded Greenville. The Panthers would strike first as they drive in three runs off Spalding defensive errors. Greenville would hold the 3-0 lead until the top of the third inning where they added four more runs to their lead making it a 7-0 ball game. The Golden Eagles would try to gather momentum in the fourth as
Grayce Marcum hits an infield single to start the inning. With two outs,
Madison Loechle sends a ball to right field that is misplayed by the right fielder as Loechle advances to second and Marcum comes around to score the only run for SU. Spalding fell flat as they drop their elimination game to Greenville, 7-1.
Erica McMann finished her season in the circle going 13-8 for the Golden Eagles.
