O'Fallon, Mo. - The Spalding baseball team chipped away for a 9-1 win over Fontbonne in the nightcap on Thursday. The Golden Eagles plated runs in each of the first four innings of the game and scored in all but three innings, finishing with 14 hits in the contest.
The scoring was sparked by leadoff hitter
Michael Newsom, who opened the game with an infield single and stolen base.
Eric Bronner followed with a single of his own and a
Michael Speck single to center plated the game's opening run. Spalding put up two runs in the second inning with
Dryden Schroeder starting a two-out rally with a single. He would come around to score on an RBI single from
Ethan Tuttle, who would later score on a throwing error.
A fourth run crossed the plate in the 3rd inning when
Hunter Strong singled in Speck. Newsom was again at the center of the scoring in the fourth, driving in a run with a single to make it 5-0. The Golden Eagles added three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh before Fontbonne was able to break the shutout with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Josh Rhiney singled in Trey Kueper to make the score 9-1.
Fontbonne was limited to just seven hits in the game as Spalding pitcher
