LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University softball team split the doubleheader against Greenville on Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles improve to 15-13 on the year and 9-5 in SLIAC.
Game 1: Spalding 3 Greenville 1
Greenville would score first in the top of the first as a couple of hits sneak through the middle of the field. Though taking a 1-0 lead, Spalding would look to answer back, but not until the third inning.
Jessica Tucker would lead off the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the third as she would send a ball down the left field line for a stand-up triple.
Grayce Marcum would bring home Tucker on a single up the middle to tie the score at one.
Bella Velez would also single up the middle to put two runners on the bases for the Golden Eagles.
Allison Nell would advance the runners an extra 60 feet on her ground out to the pitcher. With the middle being free real estate for Spalding, Miranda Thomas would also single up the middle to score Marcum on the hit to give Spalding a one-run lead.
Kailey Reed would single up the middle as well scoring Velez to put the Golden Eagles up by two runs. The scoring would cease from both teams as Spalding would get game one of the doubleheader, 3-1.
Erica McMann would earn her ninth win of the season to extend her record to 9-5 on the year.
Grayce Marcum would go 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while Miranda Thomas also goes 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Kailey Reed would go 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Game 2: Greenville 4 Spalding 3
Just like game one, the Panthers would score first in the first inning as they push one across the plate for the 1-0 advantage. Despite Greenville taking the lead in the first, Spalding would answer back with a run of their own in the bottom of the second.
Madison Loechle would start off with a hard-hit ball to the shortstop for an infield single. Loechle would then steal second the next pitch to get herself into scoring position.
Dawn Wilson would reach on a throwing error by the third baseman as Loechle rounds the bases to score and tie the score at one. Spalding would score again in the bottom of the third inning as the Golden Eagles push two more runs across for a 3-1 lead. The Panthers would score three more to take the one-run lead in the top of the fourth as they rally with singles. The Golden Eagles could not convert in the bottom of the seventh as Greenville gets the split against SU, 4-3.
Bella Velez picks up her fifth loss for a record of 2-5 on the year.
Bella Velez would go 1-for-3 with an RBI and a double as
Madison Loechle also goes 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base.
Jessica Tucker would also go 1-for-3 with a run scored.
