Softball drops doubleheader at Webster

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Spalding University softball team drops a pair of games to Webster. Spalding extends their overall record to 12-12 and 7-3 in SLIAC play.

Game 1: Webster 5 Spalding 4
The Gorloks would start their offensive drive with an early 2-0 lead in the second. The Golden Eagles would cut the lead to one in the fourth inning as Grayce Marcum starts the inning off with a stand-up double. Moments later, Jessica Tucker would also hit a double replacing Marcum at second base for SU's first run of the game. Madison Loechle would advance Tucker over to third on her single to left field. With runners on the corners, Kori Calvert would double to left field to score Tucker and move Loechle to third, tying the score at two. An error by the Gorlok third baseman would break the tie for the Golden Eagles as Loechle scores on Dawn Wilson's fielder's choice. Spalding would tack on an extra run in the top of the fifth as Tucker triples down the left field line to score Rylee Phillips who had singled to third base earlier in the inning. Webster would break the 4-2 lead with a three-run fifth inning on a homerun. Spalding could not convert offensively to take the lead as Webster walks away with game one of the doubleheader, 5-4.

Erica McMann picks up her fourth loss of the season for a record of 8-4. Jessica Tucker would go 2-for-3 in game one with a double, a triple, two RBIs, and a run scored. Loechle and Calvert were each 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Game 2: Webster 7 Spalding 3
Spalding's Grayce Marcum would send a solo shot over the fence in center to give the Golden Eagles a one-run advantage. However, the Gorloks would tie it up in the bottom of the first as they string hits together. Webster would break the tie again in game two as a lead-off walk hurts the Spalding defense sending the runner home on a double. Despite Webster taking a 2-1 lead, Spalding would answer back with two more runs of their own as Rylee Phillips doubles to left field to start the third inning. Marcum would record her second RBI of the game with a single to the outfield to score Phillips to tie the game. Bella Velez would score Marcum on a double to right center giving the Golden Eagles the 3-2 lead. The Gorlocks would rally together in the bottom of the third to put up five runs for a score of 7-3. Both teams would remain scoreless the rest of the game as the Gorloks take game two, 7-3.

Kori Calvert records her third loss of the season for an even record of 3-3. Grayce Marcum goes 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs, a double, and a homerun. Bella Velez goes 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Up next, the Golden Eagles will travel to Westminster to take on the Blue Jays for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16th with first pitch at 1 pm ET.
