Golden Eagles split doubleheader with Fontbonne

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University softball team extends their record to 3-1 in SLIAC play as they split the doubleheader with the Griffins.

Game 1: Spalding 14 Fontbonne 7
In game one, Fontbonne would take the early 1-0 lead over the Golden Eagles. Spalding would get out of the bases loaded jam to then answer back with two runs of their own for the lead. Rylee Phillips would get a leadoff single and then steal second on the next pitch. Jessica Tucker would double through the left side to score Phillips on the hit. Bella Velez roped a ball into right center for a stand-up double that scores Tucker from second. Despite the Griffins tying the score in the second, the Golden Eagles would push three more runs across for a 5-2 lead. Spalding would add four more to their lead in the bottom of the third as the offense took advantage of FU errors. The Griffins would rally up in the top of the fourth to push three runs across the plate to get them within four of the lead. SU, with an 11-5 lead, would score three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the win in game one, 14-7, of the doubleheader.

Erica McMann picks up her sixth win in the circle for the Golden Eagles. Every Golden Eagle got a hit in game one as Jessica Tucker went 2-for-4 with five runs, four RBIs, two doubles, and a walk. Bella Velez went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs while Madison Loechle goes 3-for-4 with one run, two RBIs, and a walk.

Game 2: Fontbonne 11 Spalding 4
Spalding would take an early 1-0 lead on the Griffins but would soon tie it up in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third, two HBPs and a walk would give Grayce Marcum, Jessica Tucker, and Rylee Phillips free bases. With the bases load for Velez, she doubled over the centerfielders head to clear the base path for SU to give them the 4-1 lead. Unfortunately, the Griffins would score seven in top of the fourth on seven hits. With an 8-4 lead, the Griffins look to extend it in the fifth as they score two more on fielding and throwing errors by the SU defense. Fontbonne would push their last run across in the seventh to give them their first SLIAC win, 11-4.

Kori Calvert extends her record to 2-2 on the season. Bella Velez went 1-for-4 with a double and three RBIs as Madison Loechle goes 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Up next, the Golden Eagles will travel to Greenville, Ill. to take on Greenville this Saturday, April 2nd with the first pitch at 1:00 pm ET.
