Women's basketball season comes to an end following tournament loss

EUREKA, Ill. – The Spalding women's basketball season came to an end Wednesday night as they fell to Eureka, 85-58, in the first round of the SLIAC Tournament finishing the season with a 3-4 record.

Senior Kendyl Powell led Splading's offensive efforts tallying 16 points and six rebounds. Guard Meagan Hayden added 11 points on an efficient 4-of-6 shooting from the field and Amber Higdon recorded a team-high eight rebounds.

Spalding found themselves playing catchup after the Red Devils knocked down three of their first four shot attempts including two three-pointers. Eureka increased their lead to 12 points, but Spalding responded capping off a 7-2 spurt with Hayden three-pointer cutting the deficit to seven points at the end of the first quarter. Nevertheless, the Red Devil took control in the second quarter with a 24-2 run over the first 7:17 of the quarter and led 45-23 at the half.

The Golden Eagles would go on a brief 5-3 spurt to trim the lead to 19 at the 8:50 mark in the third, but Eureka put the game out of reach with an 11-2 run increasing their margin to 28 as they went on to win, 85-58.
