LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University men's soccer team raced past Blackburn, 4-0, to advance to the SLIAC tournament semifinals. With the win, Spalding improves to 7-2-2 on the season. The #3 seed Golden Eagles will now host the #4 seed Westminster Thursday, April 22 at 7:00 p.m. ET for their semifinal match.
The Golden Eagles struck first when
Alioune Cisse found the back of the net in the 23
rd minute for the game-winning goal. The Beavers looked for the equalizer but had a pair of shots blocked and another shot on frame saved my goalkeeper
Trevor Massa to send Spalding into the half with a 1-0 advantage. Spalding extended their lead to two goals early in the second half when an attempt to clear the ball by Blackburn goalkeeper Dawson Klunk found the foot of
Chris Encarnacion who took advantage of Klunk being out of position and looped a shot into the goal from 45 yards out. Six minutes later, Spalding added another goal when Cisse played a ball to
Ethan Thornton who buried into the back of the net.
Brayan Castro scored the final goal of the game off a feed from
Asher Benge to make the final margin 4-0.
Trevor Massa and
Danny Hernandez earned a combined shutout each playing 45:00 minutes apiece in goal with Massa earning the win. The duo combined for seven saves on the night to help the Golden Eagles earn their fifth clean sheet of the season.
