LOUISVILLE, Ky - The Spalding University women's basketball team avenged Tuesday's loss at Eureka with 65-53 win over the Red Devils Saturday at Columbia Gym. With the win the Golden Eagles improve to 2-3 on the season and in SLIAC play.
After giving up 51 second half points on Tuesday, Coach Kylee Gorby was very pleased with her teams' resiliency and defensive effort in holding the Red Devils offense to 53 total points in Saturday's victory. Gorby commented, " We got punched in the mouth in our loss Tuesday at Eureka." "It was great to see our players respond and step up today get a win over a good Eureka team," Gorby finished.
Spalding came out fired up in the first quarter, shooting 50% from the field, which included 14 points in the paint on their way to taking a 21-17 lead through the first quarter. The Golden Eagles and Red Devils exchanged baskets in the second quarter each scoring 11 points and Spalding held a 32-28 lead heading into halftime. Similar to the start, Spalding came out fast to start the third quarter scoring the first seven points, five of them coming on a layup and three-pointer by
Natalie Fichter on back-to-back possessions and
Kailey Reed knocked down a jumper on the following possession to cap off the 7-0 spurt. Spalding would push their lead to 15 following a
Molly Thompson three-pointer, but Eureka would trim it to 12 just before the end of the period. SU kept their foot on the gas in the fourth quarter opening the period with a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 18 points on a
Meagan Hayden jumper with 6:49 to go and the Red Devils were never a threat the rest of the way.
Fichter led the Spalding offense scoring 15 points, while connecting on 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Hunter Wright added 13 points and 8 rebounds, while
Kendyl Powell tallied her first double-double of the season recording 10 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Saturday, March 20 celebrating Senior Day against Iowa Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m. ET.
