ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Spalding University men's soccer team's season ended in 2-2 tie against Webster in the SLIAC tournament championship game. The Golden Eagles were edged, 4-3, in a shootout by the Goloks for a trip to the NCAA tournament. Spalding finishes the season with a 12-7-2 record.
The Golden Eagles surrendered a pair of goals mid-way through the first half to fall behind 2-0. The coming in the 27
th minute off the foot of Mark Moore. Six minutes later the Gorloks Nick Thomas found the back of the net to send Webster into halftime leading 2-0. The Golden Eagle attack came out firing in the second half netting a goal just 2:02 into the second half when
Jacob Bass found Ahmodou Gueye to cut the SU deficit to one goal. Again, it was Gueye who slashed through the Gorlok defense to fire a shot past the keeper off a ball played across by
Ethan Eckert to tie the match at 2-2 with 10 minutes to play. Neither team was able to score in the final 10 minutes or two 10-minute overtime periods sending the game to a shootout. The Golden Eagles fell behind 2-0 on penalty kicks but made their next three an got a big save from
Trevor Massa to give them a chance to extend the shootout. However, Webster's Noah Abraham was able to get the ball past Massa to end the match.
Gueye led the Spalding offense scoring both goals, while
Jacob Bass and Eckert each tallied an assist.
Trevor Massa had five saves to earb the tie after taking over for
Danny Hernandez after the first half.
