WOOSTER, Oh. – The Spalding University women's basketball team beat Wooster, 69-63, to get their first win of the season. The Golden Eagles improve to 1-3 on the year as they continue into the classic.
Both teams went neck in neck on the scoreboard as the minutes ran down before the half. The Golden Eagles would end the first period down by just two as Wooster would get a shot off the steal to give them the two-point lead. Wooster would pull away slightly coming into the second period as they went up by seven. Spalding would take advantage of the missed shots by the Fighting Scots as
Kamryn McMahon would get a basket in the paint to make it a three-point Scots lead. The Golden Eagles would get the ball back with a minute left in the period as
Maelyn Ridener would put up a dagger three to tie the score at 33. Going into the half, the Golden Eagles worked for a six-point lead on the Fighting Scots. Both teams would fight for the lead, but ultimately Spalding walks away with the win, 69-63.
Kailey Reed put up 14 points while making 5 of 6 free throws as
Natalie Fichter followed with 13 points, eight rebounds, and two assists while
Maleah Hirn adds another 13 points with three rebounds and two assists.
The Golden Eagles will take on Carnegie Mellon for day two of the Wooster Classic with a tip-off at 2:00 pm ET.
