Spalding falls in season opener against Indiana University-Southeast

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding softball team competed in their first two games of the season against Indiana University-Southeast (IUS), falling 5-2 and 12-3 to the Grenadiers.  

GAME ONE 
IU-SOUTHEAST 5 – SPALDING 2  
After a scoreless first five innings, IUS broke the tie, scoring three runs off a homerun in the top of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, two more Grenadier runs scored off a pair of RBI singles. In the bottom of the sixth, Ally Klein got the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard via an RBI single that brought Bailey Melton home, making the score 5-1. In the bottom of the seventh, Meagan Hendricks reached on a fielder's choice, bringing home Grace Sweat for Spalding's final run. The game ended in favor of IUS, 5-2.
 
GAME TWO  
IU-SOUTHEAST 12 – SPALDING 3
IUS came out much hotter in the second game, scoring six runs in the top of the first. In the top of the 4th, the Grenadiers added two more to their total, pushing the lead to 8-0. Amilia Hall got things going for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a double to center field. Hall advanced to third on a hit by Olivia Carter and then scored on a wild pitch, giving Spalding their first run of the game. IUS added another run in the top of the fifth, moving the game to 9-1. Jayda Garrison doubled to left center field in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Maranda Thomas. Garrison later scored on an RBI from Brooke Smith, giving the Golden Eagles their third and final run of the game. The Grenadiers scored three more times in the final inning and took home the win 12-3. 

UP NEXT
The Golden Eagles travel to Berea on March 12th to take on the Mountaineers. Games are scheduled to begin at 5:30 and 7:30 PM.
