LOUISVILLE, KY. – Spalding softball opened SLIAC play with a pair or wins over Webster, 8-0 and 14-10. With the wins, the Golden Eagles improve to 14-5 on the season.
GAME ONE
SPALDING 8 – WEBSTER 0
The Golden Eagles came out hot in game one scoring five runs on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. The Spalding loaded the bases to start the inning, and
Grace Sweat drove in the first two runs of the inning with a double down the right field line.
Mac Henderson followed Sweat with a two-run double to left center to push SU's lead to four runs and scored from third on a
Lindsey Hubbard groundout to short to cap off the inning. Spalding added three runs in the bottom of the second.
Jaycee Head singled through the left side scoring
Addie Morris from third. Head then stole second forcing an errant throw by the catcher allowing
Ally Klein to advance home.
Olivia Carter hit the Eagles third double of the game, this time a shot to left center, which scored Head from second to run the score to 8-0. Carter and the Eagles defense would keep the Gorloks in check over the next three innings forcing an out on 9-of-10 batters to end the game on the eight after five run rule.
NOTABLE STATS
Carter (6-3) took the win for the Golden Eagles in the circle facing 16 batters, while only giving up two hits. Sweat and Henderson led the way at the plate each going 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
GAME TWO
SPALDING 14 – WEBSTER 10
After a Webster run in the first inning, Spalding immediately answered with a run in the home half of the inning.
Ally Klein started the Golden Eagles off with a single up the middle and
Jaycee Head doubled to left center to score Klein. The Spalding offense exploded for 12 runs over the next two innings scoring seven in the second and five in the third. A Klein two-RBI double and a Sweat two-run single to right center highlighted the second inning. The Gorloks responded with six runs in the top of the third, but a pair of two-run singles by Miranda Thomas and
Abby Booker would help SU neutralize the damage to take a 13-7 lead into the fourth. Webster would score a run in both the fifth and sixth innings, but a Klein single in the sixth brought in
Lindsey Hubbard to keep the margin at five runs heading into the top of the seventh. With one out, Webster scored on a sacrifice fly to center field, but the next batter popped out to second to end the game.
NOTABLE STATS
Carter (7-3) earned the win, coming on in relief of starter Chlor Skorija to begin the fourth inning. The sophomore limited Webster to two earned runs, on four hits. Klein led SU hitters going 4-for-5 with a double, a triple, three RBIs, three runs scored and one stolen base. Head and Thomas both finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Booker and Sweat had two RBIs on one hit each.
