MT. PLEASANT, Iowa – The Spalding baseball team rolled through a doubleheader at Iowa Wesleyan, 15-2 and 8-3, improving to 28-8 on the season and 17-2 in conference.
GAME ONE
SPALDING 15 – IOWA WESLEYAN 2
After a scoreless first inning, freshman
JT Johnson put the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard with a two-run homer, his second home run of the season. In the third, SU added three more runs, the first on a wild pitch scoring
Eric Meyer, the second on a passed ball to bring in
Quenton Brownlee, and Johnson capped it off with a RBI single driving in
Mitchell Langley. A Nick Salas two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth cut Spalding's lead to three runs, but an eight-run top of the fifth put the game out of reach. The Golden Eagles, who lead the conference in home runs, did it with small-ball in the fifth, scoring eight runs on seven singles and an error. SU put two more on the board in the sixth, when
Evan Trentman hit a two-RBI double to right center bring in
Jason Ochoa and
Robbie Dale to run the final count, 13-2.
NOTABLE STATS
Zach Jones (7-0) picked up the win holding Iowa Wesleyan to one earned run, on four hits, while striking out 11 batters in 6.0 innings pitched. Johnson led SU at the plate going 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Meyer also finished with three hits, a RBI and stolen base.
GAME TWO
SPALDING 8 – IOWA WESLEYAN 3
In game two, Spalding jumped out to an eight run lead. A sac fly in the first by Meyer and another by Johnson in the second scored SU's first two runs. Brownlee drove in the first run of a three-run fifth, and Baked doubled bringing in Brownlee and Meyer to make it 5-0. Baker drove in Trentman in the top of the eighth with a fielder's choice to short, Meyer scored on a wild pitch and Johnson capped it off with a RBI single, his sixth RBI on the day. After striking out the first two batters of the inning, Parisi gave up a pair of homers that cut the SU lead to five runs, but the next batter flew out to center ending the game.
NOTABLE STATS
Jack Parisi (5-0) earned the win limiting the Tigers to three runs, on five hits, while striking out 14 batters in 8 and 2/3 innings. At the plate, Baker and Johnson led SU, each going 1-for-3, with Baker driving in three runs and Johnson driving in two.
UP NEXT
The Golden Eagles wrap up the regular season with a weekend series at Greenville College. Spalding needs to take 2-for-3 to win the regular season conference championship outright, and just one win to split Webster. The series opens with a nine inning game Friday at 7:00 pm, and concludes Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
