ST. LOUIS, MO – Spalding softball splits SLIAC play double header with Fontbonne, 9-0 and 1-9, putting the Eagles' record at 19-10 and 6-2 in SLIAC play.
GAME ONE
SPALDING 9 – FONTBONNE 0
The Eagles came out swinging in the first game of their double header.
Ally Klein started the Eagles off with a single to center field.
Mac Henderson followed up Klein by hitting an RBI single to left field, advancing Klein across home-plate to record the first run of the night. Addison Morris complemented the fast start by the Golden Eagles, hitting a single to left field, scoring
Grace Sweat and advancing Henderson. Henderson then scored off a wild pitch by the Griffins. After a scoreless 2
nd inning from both teams,
Olivia Carter started the top of the third inning right where the Golden Eagles left off in the 1
st, knocking a double to center field. Following the good hit by Carter,
Grace Sweat smacked in a two-run homer, scoring herself and Carter. Henderson followed up by smashing a homer of her own, and just like that, the Golden Eagles found themselves with a 6-0 lead in just three innings. Continuing the momentum into the 4th,
Jennifer Peffley started the inning off with a single to left field. After another single by Carter, both runners advanced to scoring position on a pass ball. Sweat singled to score Peffley and advance Carter to third, who scored shortly thereafter on a throwing error. Addison Morris hit a deep sacrifice fly ball to center field to score
Kailey Reed and end the game in five innings.
Olivia Carter (W, 9-4) took the win for the Eagles, facing 17 batters and only allowing one hit while the Eagles' defense shut the Griffins down, allowing no runs to be scored.
GAME TWO
FONTBONNE 9 – SPALDING 1
After coming off hot in the first game, the Eagles couldn't produce the same results for the second game of the double header.
Lindsey Hubbard scored the only run for the Eagles in the top of the third. Hubbard,
Ally Klein (2), and
Mac Henderson all produced singles for the Eagles but it wasn't enough to beat the Griffins, who went on to score nine runs on the Eagles defense. Chloe Skorijia (6-2) took the loss for the Eagles.
