Golden Eagles sweep Blue Jays with the help of Brownlee's walkoff hit

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding baseball team swept a doubleheader against Westminster, 6-4 and 9-8, improving to 21-7 overall and 10-1 in conference.

GAME ONE
SPALDING 6 – WESTMINSTER 4
Westminster scored a run in the top of the first, but the Eagles answered in the bottom of the second. Quenton Brownlee homered to center field to get Spalding on the board, and a two-run single by Jason Ochoa put SU on top, 3-1. Westminster responded in the top of the third, scoring two runs to knot the game at three runs apiece. However, the Eagles wasted no time in the bottom of the third when Cody Milliner walked to start the inning and an Eric Meyer double brought in Milliner to put SU back on top, 4-3. Back-to-back fly outs to center advanced Meyer home. Neither team scored in the fourth, but Spalding plated a run in the fifth extending their lead to three runs. Garrett Wilson walked to start the inning, moved to second on a Milliner fly out, advanced to third on a passed ball and came home on a Meyer sac fly to center. Westminster managed to score a run in the top of the seventh, but back-to-back 4-6 force-outs ended the game. Dillon Sievert (5-0) earned the win, limiting the Blue Jays to four runs, on nine hits, while striking out five batters in a complete game effort. Brownlee led Spalding at the plate going 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Ochoa and Meyer each drove in two RBIs.

GAME TWO
SPALDING 9 – WESTMINSTER 8
The Eagles were on the winning end of a dogfight in game two, overcoming a one-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth to grit out the victory. The Blue Jays landed the first blow scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first. Spalding chipped a run off the deficit in the home half of the inning on a Quenton Brownlee sac fly that brought Garrett Wilson in from third. Westminster added another run in the top of the second, but the Eagles plated the equalizers in the bottom of the third to tie the game, 3-3. A hit-by-pitch put Cameron Spencer and Eric Meyer on before an Evan Trentman singled loaded the bases. Another Brownlee sacrifice fly advanced the runners, scoring Spencer, and Trentman came home for the tying run on a passed ball. The Blue Jays surged back in front with a pair of runs in the fourth, but Spalding answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-5 lead. Wilson led off with a double and Meyer doubled, scoring Wilson. Brownlee reached on a hit-by-pitch and Milliner followed with a single scoring Meyer. A passed ball moved Brownlee and Milliner over, and Dillon Sievert singled up the middle, scoring Milliner and Brownlee to put SU in front. However, Westminster countered with a three runs in the top of the seventh and held an 8-7 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. Nevertheless, the Golden Eagles would not be denied. With one out, Wilson doubled to right field, Trentman reached on balls and Meyer was hit by a pitch to juice the bases. Brownlee answered the call again, this time lining a ball into the left field gap. Wilson jogged home with ease, and Trentman raced around third, sliding into home, beating the throw as the Eagles took game two, 9-8, in walkoff fashion. Lane Staples (4-0) came on to earn the win. The senior limited the Blue Jays to two runs, on three hits, while striking out five batters in 2.0 innings. Peyton Hood also gave the Eagles two solid innings scattering just one hit and one run in 3.0 innings. Brownlee drove in a team-high four runs, while Wilson (3-for-5) and Meyer (2-for-4) were the only Eagles to finish with multi-hit games.
