Golden Eagles top Case, 6-5, taking game one of series

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding baseball team took game one of the weekend series, 6-5, to improve to 3-1 on the season.  

THE BASIC

HIGHLIGHTS
- After 2.5 scoreless innings, the Golden Eagles plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Dillon Sievert ripped a single to the gap in right center driving in Mitchell Langley and Evan Trentman.
 
- The Spartans took a run back in the top of the third, but the Golden Eagles answered with two more runs in the home half of the inning extending the lead to three runs. Trentman reached on a walk, Langley followed with a single to right, an error at second allowed the runners to advance to second and third, and a Sievert two-RBI single to right field made the score, 4-1.
 
- Case responded with a trio of runs in the fifth inning to knot the game, 4-4. However, sophomore catcher Zane Baker blasted a solo home run over the left field wall to put SU back on top, 5-4.
 
- SU added a run in the bottom of the eighth, lifting a sacrifice fly into right field allowing Quenton Brownlee to race home extending the SU lead to two runs.
 
- Case's Tre Armstrong made it interesting with a solo shot in the top of the ninth, but reliever Aaron Blake came on to close the door striking out three batters on 10 pitches to earn the save.

STAT LEADERS
- Dillon Sievert and Zane Baker led the Golden Eagles at the plate. Sievert went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Baker also drove in a pair of runs going 1-for-2 with a home run.
 
- Lane Staples (1-0) came on to earn the win holding Spartan batters to one run, on two hits, while striking six batters in 3.2 innings pitched.

FOR THE FOES
- Mark Gross (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing five runs, two earned, on four hits, while striking out six and walking two.
 
- Tre Armstrong led the Spartans at the plate going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a homer.  

UP NEXT
- The Golden Eagles will be back on the diamond this Sunday taking on Case Western Reserve at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.
