Golden Ealges soar past MacMurray, 82-64

LOUISVILLE, KY. – The Spalding men's basketball team topped MacMurray, 82-64, and are now standing at 11-12 overall and 10-6 in SLIAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- MacMurray drew first blood with a deep three to take a quick 3-0 lead to start the first half. Robert Bendingfield hit three consecutive jumpers to give Spalding a 6-3 lead. Over the next few possessions, the teams exchanged baskets. With 9:43 left to play in the first half, Jobby Howard hit a fast break layup to give the Golden Eagles a four-point lead, 21-17. The Highlanders cut the lead to two, 27-25, with 5:41 remaining. After another MacMurray basket, the score was tied at 27. Dominique Ellis found the bottom of the net with a jumper of his own, giving the lead back to Spalding 29-27.  With 1:18 left to play, Brian Tribble hit a contested layup that pushed the lead to 38-32. The Highlanders scored again to cut the lead to four. Ellis found himself scoring four quick points with seconds left to play in the first half, giving the Golden Eagles an eight-point lead, 42- 34, at half time.

- Ellis picked up right where he left off in the second half but instead of scoring, he found Brendan Holt who knocked down a quick jumper. With 13:19 to play, Ellis was fouled and converted four free-throws after MacMurray received a technical foul. With the lead sitting at 16 points, 55-39, the Highlanders attempted a comeback, going on a 9-3 run to cut the lead to 11.  Later, Tribble would find Bendingfield for a three ball that put the Golden Eagles up by 16, 63-47. MacMurray kept pushing, trimming the lead to 10 with 5:45 left to play. Once again, Bendingfield stepped up and hit another jumper, putting the Golden Eagles up 69-57. The rest of the game saw Spalding controlling the clock and hitting free-throws, going 8-8 from the line in the final 3:23 of play. The Golden Eagles won the game 82-64.

NOTABLE STATS

- Dominique Ellis had a productive senior night, leading all scorers with 19 points. He also had four assists, two rebounds, and a game high three steals. Robert Bendingfield had 15 points on the night, shooting 7-13 (53.8) from the floor. He also added five boards and four assists. Troy Amanor added 12 points and six rebounds. Jobby Howard scored 11 points and Brian Tribble scored seven points, providing a spark off the bench.
- The Golden Eagles had 23 points off turnovers and 26 bench points compared to the Highlanders nine points off turnovers and 16 bench points. Spalding had the slight edge in rebounding (27 to 26) and field goal percentage (55.8% to 54.2%).
 
FOR THE FOES
- Logan Dorethy dropped a team high 18 points and grabbed six boards. Connor Vincent scored 12 points, while Drew Burwinkel and Derek Bourke both had seven points. Wade Fox crashed the glass for five rebounds, handed out a team high seven assists, and added four points.

- The Golden Eagles are back in action Thursday night, February 14th, traveling to Blackburn to take on the Beavers at 8:00 pm EST.
